Diwali is India’s biggest and most important festival of the year, and the Coalition team was delighted to have its own celebration. With an active Coalition office in Amritsar, India, a Diwali event in Culver City, CA was a great way to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the East. At Coalition Technologies, we’re always eager to celebrate the various cultures our diverse team brings to the table, and we really enjoyed the warmth and fellowship Diwali brought to the office.
“The Festival of Lights” started as an ancient Hindu harvest festival to commemorate the last harvest of the year before winter. Today, it is a national holiday celebrated by most Indians and other Eastern nations, regardless of their personal beliefs. The interpretation of the Diwali story varies depending on region, but the underlying theme is good triumphing over evil—light shining through the darkness. That’s why a typical Diwali celebration involves candles, fireworks, clay lamps, strings of electric lights, and much more.
The Five Days of Diwali
Diwali typically lasts for five days. The first day involves cleaning and planning, then on the second day the decorating begins. The third day is the main festival, which involves a prayer to the Goddess Lakshmi, firework festivities, and a lavish feast. On the fourth day, friends, family members, and other loved ones show fellowship and give each other gifts. Finally, on the last day it is customary for brothers to honor their sisters and wish them well.
While our version of Diwali may not have lasted five days, it was certainly a wonderful experience. We had electric candles glowing near everyone’s computers along with plants from our remote team member, Aman, from India.
Strings of lights greeted us as they shone along the walls and over our desks to set the Diwali mood. We all enjoyed exchanging gifts and mouthwatering Indian food and desserts, while thinking about our friends in India.
The Coalition family is global, and we strongly believe that it is important to connect on a personal level, as well as a professional one.
Mark your Calendar for Next Year
If you have never been a part of a Diwali celebration, we encourage you to celebrate this stunning holiday. After all, everyone appreciates fellowship, glowing lights, good food, and gifts. Regardless of personal backgrounds, we can all get behind the universal message of light and love. By celebrating cultures that are not familiar to us, we experience the richness of global diversity which ultimately brings us all together.
