ChatGPT for Ecommerce: Who Can Sell and How to Prepare

AI SEO, Artificial Intelligence, SEO

Using ChatGPT for ecommerce is becoming increasingly common among the platform’s 700 million weekly users.1 Many consumers, especially those considering major purchases, enjoy the highly personalized, conversational shopping experience powered by AI agents.

Although ChatGPT’s 66 million daily search-like prompts are impressive, traditional search still reigns supreme, with Google still handling around 210 times more at 14 billion queries every day.2

In spite of its comparatively lower volume, ChatGPT is still a pint-sized powerhouse in the ecommerce realm. Research has shown that ChatGPT sessions convert at a 15.9% rate compared to Google Organic’s 1.8%.3

With the number of consumers who use ChatGPT for ecommerce rising, an incredible conversion rate, and the recent launch of Instant Checkout for Etsy sellers, it’s no wonder so many ecommerce sellers are scrambling to adopt AI ecommerce integration as quickly as possible.

Why Board the ChatGPT Train?

Selling your products in ChatGPT can open new revenue streams, increase brand awareness, and instill confidence in current and potential customers.

Furthermore, ChatGPT’s AI agents essentially act as liaisons between business and customer, recommending products and answering questions in real time. It’s no surprise so many ChatGPT shoppers end up converting.

Being on ChatGPT’s good side has its perks. Of course, reaping the benefits of ChatGPT for ecommerce is easier said than done. You’re going to need a rock-solid AI SEO strategy to compete and win. That’s where we come in.

No, although Instant Checkout compatibility is a valuable step toward full AI ecommerce integration, ChatGPT still displays products and links to websites where users can convert.

What types of ecommerce businesses benefit most from ChatGPT?

The conversational nature of ChatGPT performs exceptionally well for businesses that sell products that require significant research. For example, electronics shoppers ask 50% more questions compared to other categories.5

  3. Use the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to build and implement the integration.7

We’ll go into more detail below.

Why ChatGPT Is Becoming a Marketplace

ChatGPT is changing online shopping

Traditional search-based shopping tends to be highly focused. While the consumer may do some research, they usually know what they want and then search for it.

On the other hand, LLMs combine product discovery, research, and purchase into one seamless conversational interaction. Users can simply tell ChatGPT exactly what they need, and their dedicated virtual assistant will provide a list of extremely relevant options.

From the seller’s perspective, using ChatGPT for ecommerce boosts impulse buys and prevents abandoned carts. It can reduce the frequency of unsatisfied customers and product returns.

ChatGPT can even act as an unpaid 24/7 customer support team, fielding questions that would have otherwise landed on your virtual desk.

AI ecommerce integration lets you take advantage of the convenient, frictionless shopping experience ChatGPT facilitates, as well as its vast (and growing) reach.

What ecommerce platforms sell on ChatGPT? Unlike the new Instant Checkout feature, all ecommerce platforms can sell on ChatGPT. However, using ChatGPT for ecommerce is only advantageous if you can capture the elusive citation in the first place. That feat requires behind-the-scenes strategies like ChatGPT SEO and reputation management.

The Role of ChatGPT Instant Checkout

Now that you understand why ChatGPT is a small but mighty platform for sellers, let’s talk more about what the new Instant Checkout feature is and how it works from the buyer’s point of view.

It’s important to note that Instant Checkout is currently being rolled out at the time of this writing. As anyone who follows AI knows, things move fast. For now, shoppers can only use Instant Checkout for Etsy products, with Shopify and Walmart/Sam’s Club support on the way.

You’re likely already familiar with the basic idea of how ChatGPT works for ecommerce transactions. It provides external links based on the user’s query. Instant Checkout is similar, but the key difference is that the user doesn’t need to leave the platform to complete the purchase.

What Instant Checkout Looks Like

Here’s a look at the new Instant Checkout feature in action:

Query: “Please recommend a chunky vintage sweater that would be great for autumn.”

In this image, the question is asked without being logged in. We get suggestions from Etsy and other retailers with external links to complete the purchase.

In this next image, the question is asked while logged in. Notice anything different? ChatGPT is now solely recommending sweaters available on Etsy. Coincidence?

When I click the first sweater, there’s a “buy” button.

Without ever leaving the platform, I can now complete the transaction.

From the buyer’s perspective, using ChatGPT for ecommerce couldn’t be easier. In under a minute, I was able to go from needing a sweater suggestion to entering my credit card number.

Selling on ChatGPT With Etsy

What ecommerce platforms sell on ChatGPT with Instant Checkout right now? As mentioned, Etsy is currently the only platform that has functioning AI ecommerce integration with the new feature.

Fortunately for Etsy sellers, using Instant Checkout is a breeze. Although Etsy shops are automatically enrolled in Instant Checkout, there are some key preliminary measures you must take for the feature to work.

While sweater shopping, I noticed that one of the sweaters didn’t have a “buy” button. I asked ChatGPT why and got this response:

How to Set Up Your Etsy With ChatGPT

  1. For sellers looking to use ChatGPT for ecommerce, Etsy Payments and immediate purchases must be enabled.
  2. From there, listings will start appearing natively in ChatGPT’s chat ecosystem with in-line checkout ready to go.

It’s worth mentioning that I searched for “chunky vintage sweaters” on the Etsy website. The sweaters recommended by ChatGPT didn’t show up on Etsy’s first page. Had I been shopping traditionally, it’s very possible that I wouldn’t have discovered ChatGPT’s favorite sweaters.

This highlights the bespoke nature of ChatGPT. When I’m provided with a small handful of highly relevant suggestions, rather than an overwhelming barrage of options, I’m much more likely to pull the trigger on an impulse buy.

The conversational element makes it feel like I have a personal assistant combing the racks to find the perfect sweater. The lack of friction when using ChatGPT for ecommerce allows for a smooth, fully personalized transaction from discovery to conversion.

Selling on ChatGPT With Shopify

Although Shopify support hasn’t fully launched just yet, over a million Shopify stores will have Instant Checkout soon. Now is the time to start preparing for AI ecommerce integration.

What that looks like will vary from seller to seller, but here are the basic steps you should be taking:

  • Align your store with Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).8
  • Optimize product descriptions to provide answers ChatGPT can use in responses.
  • Make sure all data (inventory levels, variants, prices, etc.) is up to date.
  • Integrate Stripe or Shopify Payments (if you’re not already using it).
  • Try to get reviews and mentions that boost your brand’s credibility.
  • Create authoritative content to establish your brand as a trusted resource.
  • Partner with an AI SEO agency that has experience optimizing ChatGPT for ecommerce.

Instant Checkout Isn’t Everything

Knowing what ecommerce platforms sell on ChatGPT Instant Checkout, you might be wondering where WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Magento fit in.

Although these platforms aren’t launch partners with day one support, Instant Checkout is an open standard. The checkout just won’t be within ChatGPT, but will be done through external links.

Developers can prepare for future support by building custom integrations using the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).7

You’ll also need to prepare your product feed according to OpenAI’s specifications9 and fill out their merchant application form. From there, OpenAI will be onboarding eligible merchants on a rolling basis.7

If you’re not an Etsy or Shopify seller, you might be feeling some FOMO right now. Although Instant Checkout is an exciting update, remember that using ChatGPT for ecommerce is still possible (and beneficial), even without immediate Instant Checkout support.

Getting cited by ChatGPT still amplifies brand awareness, visibility, and recognition. And those external links are still clickable! Sure, Instant Checkout is convenient, but consumers still click links. The option to pay in ChatGPT isn’t always going to be a deciding factor, especially for major purchases.

How to Prepare Your Platform for ChatGPT Selling

If your platform doesn’t yet support Instant Checkout AI ecommerce integration, there are still steps you can take to make ChatGPT a viable and effective revenue stream.

Inventory syncing and product listing automation:

In order to provide users with relevant product recommendations, leveraging ChatGPT for ecommerce requires that the platform receives a structured, constant feed of accurate, real-time data.

Authoritative content to bolster real-time customer interactions:

Remember: ChatGPT is acting on your behalf. Your content must be an accurate reflection of your business. Don’t expect ChatGPT to turn trash into cash! Remember GIGO: Garbage in, garbage out.

Payment processing and order management integration:

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) acts as a bridge between ChatGPT and your payment provider. Establishing the ACP framework now empowers you to be ready for future integrations.
